Times-Dispatch
Go! Discover Richmond
May 4, 2013 - Virginia War Memorial

The Times-Dispatch Go! Discover Richmond is excited to announce an all new 10k course for 2013, highlighting Downtown, the Capitol, Jackson Ward and Oregon Hill! Come out and see Richmond like you have never seen it before. We will walk (yes, this is a WALKING event!) our way in and around some of the city’s greatest treasures including historic sites and landmarks, restaurants, and boutiques. And don’t be surprised when you turn a corner and see Patrick Henry, Elvis (he performed at the Landmark in 1958, you know) or other characters from Richmond’s past.

Then it’s over to Monroe Park, into Jackson Ward, and down to the Capitol. You’ll pass by numerous museums and historic sites, unique restaurants and shops, churches, and landmarks. Antique cars, historical figures and authentic architecture will bring the course to life, all while you enjoy a fantastic workout!

Shorter Course Option Offered! Don’t feel up to walking a full 10k? A shorter, 3.7-mile course is also available that will bypass Jackson Ward and downtown. Remember, this is not a race, so you are welcome to cut corners (or stop and shop) wherever you like to make your walk as enjoyable as possible—just be sure to make it back to the Virginia War Memorial within 4 hours!

Please Note

Here are a few important points you need to know about the event:

  • Safety on the Course - The course is clearly marked with signs. However, please note that you are sharing the streets with vehicular traffic. Please obey all traffic laws. That means staying on sidewalks, crossing streets only at the crosswalks and paying close attention to traffic signals. Some major intersections will feature police officers directing traffic and event participants.
  • Course time limit - There is a 4-hour course time limit. That gives you plenty of time to walk the complete course, but it does limit any time you have to stop at the individual attractions.
  • Strollers, Joggers, Wagons and Backpacks - If you are using a stroller, baby jogger, wagon, backpack carrier, etc., to take children along the course, please be sure to sign the waiver for the child at packet pickup and receive your stroller tag. The tag must be attached in plain view on the stroller/jogger/ carrier, etc., before you are allowed on the course.
  • No dogs allowed - For the safety of all participants, dogs are not allowed in the event.
